Para continuar con el cultivo del lino en el País Vasco hemos sembrado lino de fibra en diferentes lugares: un bancal pequeño en la huerta de la KE Intxaurrondo, medio bancal en los viveros de Ulia, aprox. 120 m2 en Fraisoro. Desgraciadamente nos ha pasado la fecha adecuada para cosechar el lino a tiempo (estuve de vacaciones, entro otras razones): los tallos estaban demasiado amarillos, incluso marrones ya y las cápsulas casi todas marrones. Deberían estar verdes todavía por lo menos la mitad de las cápsulas. En total, vamos a intentar desgranar lo que podemos y también enriar los tallos menos madurados, a ver, si podemos sacar alguna fibra para hilar. El lino en los viveros estaba menos maduro pero tiene una curva en al tallo: creo que una tormenta con demasiado viento lo hizo doblar y no se recuperó. Ahora toca a vigilar el lino en el enriado y sacarlo cuando esté listo, es decir, cuándo se pueda sacar las fibras fácilmente de las partes leñosas. Si podemos ponerlo a secarse pronto, igual será listo para el 22 de septiembre, el día del Atlantikaldia de Errentería, cuando estemos en el portál del ayuntamiento con talleres de elaboración del lino.
En Fraisoro nos han caído algunos fardos: cuando llegamos la semana pasada para salvarlos, estaban en el suelo y ya medio comidos por algunos bichos (no sé qué eran, a mí me parecieron a ácaros). Estos fardos son para tirarlos al compost, pero los demás hemos partido en dos grupos: uno al enriado en el campo, los demás para secar en la sidrería. Abajo el lino en los viveros y en Intxaurrondo:

To keep the culture of the flax in the Basque Country alive, we sowed flax seeds in different places: in a small flowerbed in the garden of the Cultural Center of Intxaurrondo, half a flowerbed in the Viveros de Ulia-Park and about 120 square metres in Fraisoro (which is a kind of agricultural school, I think..). Unfortunately, we missed the best date to harvest the flax so it was past its best time (for the fibres): the stalks were too yellow already, some even brown, and the capsules were almost all brown. They should be green, at least half of the capsules, to get the best fibre quality. Anyway, we are going to try to get the most of it and have deseeded some of the flax and put it to ret. We hope to be able to save at least a bit of the fibres. Let’s see, if we succeed… The flax in the park was less advanced but had suffered some damage during a spring storm: the stalks all had a bad curve at the bottom. Now I have to watch the retting flax well to stop the fermenting process at the right time. Some flax is ready and drying again. So we will have some flax to play with at the Atlantikaldia Festival in Errentería on September 22nd. We are going to be in front of the town hall: come and visit us if you are close!
