Según mi profesora en el tema del lino, Ruth Läng (escritora suiza de un librito sobre el cultivo de lino), el lino se suele sembrar el 100. día del año. Quiere decir que es alrededor de la mitad de abril. Y según el experto linero local, Estanislao Urdapilleta de Oiartzun, la luna debería ser menguante. Así que ayer fui a los Viveros de Ulía para sembrar el lino de este año. Había llovido el sábado y el domingo siguió lloviendo, así que nadie salvo una amiga mia, Marta, se acercó para ayudarme. Me habían asignado un bancal al lado de uno que pensaba que podía usar y éste no estaba preparado: Por eso, Marta y yo tuvimos que preparar el bancal primero: arrancamos las malas hierbas de la mitad del bancal y luego llenamos hasta un tercio del bancal con tierra. Por suerte dejó de llover justo cuando empezamos a trabajar. Cuando más o menos dos metros cuadrados del bancal estaban listos, sembramos la linaza en filas: 10 filas a unos 12 cm de distancia entre ellas. Señora Läng escribió en su libro que se necesitan 30 semillas en 10 cm. Después de sembrar las semillas en las ranuras, cubrimos la linaza con un poco de tierra. Esperamos que los pájaros no coman demasiadas… Hoy ha llovido algo (por fin, haha), pero espero que no llueva demasiado en los próximos días.
Due to my flax teacher, Ruth Läng (who is the auther of a booklet about cultivating flax), it should be sown on the 100th day of the year. That means a day around the 10th April. And due to the local flax expert Estanislao Urdanpilleta from Oiartzun, one should sow flax during a waning moon. So yesterday I went to the Viveros de Ulía to sow this year’s flax. The day before, Saturday, it had rained a lot and yesterday it kept raining, so nobody came to the park to help me except my friend Marta. I had been given a vegetable patch next to the one I thought I could use and this new one was not at all prepared: Marta and I had to do the weeding first which we did up to the middle of the bed and then we filled about a third of the bed with more compost. Fortunately, it stopped raining as soon as we had started working. When about two square meters were prepared, we sowed the seeds into the grooves we had made with some sticks. Mrs Läng wrote in her booklet that about 30 seeds are needed for 10 cm. After filling all 10 grooves with the flax seeds, we lightly covered them with some soil so the birds won’t eat too many seeds. Today it started to rain again (at last, haha), but I hope it will not rain too much during the next days….
