Lately, I visited my family in Germany and was told about a weaving workshop close to my former school: Die Schafgarbe. The name of the shop is Sheeps Yarrow which is a medicinal plant and can also be used for dying, I think… Anyway, I paid the shop a visit to talk to its owner, Margaret Röhrig. She was so kind to explain to me the latest difficulties to maintain the shop and the workshop as it is: The town hall or the owner of the building wanted her to move to another place to make room for German courses offered by the adult education center (Volkshochschule). As you can imagine, it’s quite difficult to find an appropriate place for so many (7) weaving looms.
Hace poco visité a mi familia en Alemania y me hablaron de un taller de tejido cerca de mi antiguo colegio: Die Schafgarbe. El nombre de la tienda es Milenrama, que es una planta medicinal y también se puede utilizar para teñir, creo… De todos modos, visité la tienda para hablar con su propietaria, Margaret Röhrig. Fue muy amable al explicarme las últimas dificultades para mantener la tienda y el taller tal y como están: El ayuntamiento o el propietario del edificio querían que se trasladara a otro lugar para hacer sitio a los cursos de alemán que ofrece el centro de educación de adultos (Volkshochschule). Como puedes imaginar, es bastante difícil encontrar un lugar apropiado para tantos telares.
Another setback for this weaving workshop is the fact that the main wool provider closed this year: The small spinning mill in the neighboring village of Horst has stopped production since the beginning of this year. The company’s website is still working but Margaret told me that they don’t spin more yarn. It’s so sad to see all these smaller businesses close.
Otro contratiempo para este taller de tejidos es el hecho de que el principal proveedor de lana haya cerrado este año: La pequeña hilandería del pueblo vecino de Horst ha dejado de producir desde principios de este año. La página web de la empresa sigue funcionando, pero Margaret me dijo que ya no hilan más. Es muy triste ver cómo cierran todas estas pequeñas empresas.
For now, the workshop can stay there (although they raised the rent for the rooms) and I hope that many people take the opportunity to learn how to weave and make their own towels or other cloth. We should all try to conserve these old handcrafting techniques into our future. Good luck, Margaret!
Por ahora, el taller puede seguir allí (aunque han subido el alquiler de las habitaciones) y espero que mucha gente aproveche la oportunidad para aprender a tejer y hacer sus propias toallas u otras telas.
